College is a time of transition and independence, and it’s essential for students to be prepared for the social and academic challenges they may face, including those related to alcohol and other drugs.

Here are 8 suggestions for making the most successful transition into your academic career:

ONE: Pre-College Program

Many universities offer pre-college programs in the summer or right before the semester begins that provide students with a glimpse into college life and academics, which can include discussions on how to set you up for success.  Ask about these types of programs, apply and take advantage of them!

TWO: Read and reread your university/college’s information online.

The more you know about the campus culture, resources and where services/classes are located, the more prepared you will be when you are a student.

THREE: Attend orientation events

Even those you think might be boring or not applicable to you.  These programs offered by schools are designed by college officials for you to be prepared and set you up for success.

FOUR: Talk to your parents, mentors, coaches or a trusted individual about any concerns you have about being in college.

Maybe it is whether you are ready to be “on your own”, the rigors of academics or juggling academics, social life and work- all of these concerns are legit and talking to someone about them will be helpful in your preparation of your next big step in your life.

FIVE: Beware of the hazards

Entering a college/university setting, high school students should be aware of the potential hazards associated with binge drinking and underage drinking, including academic problems, safety risks, and health consequences.  Educating yourself is the answer to success- knowledge is powerful!  More detailed information provided in the next article

SIX: Grow your skills and knowledge

Students with the knowledge and skills needed to make responsible decisions about alcohol, including choosing not to drink, are invaluable as you strive to be the best version of yourself.

SEVEN: Talk to people, know the risks

Research shows that students who choose not to drink often do so because their parents or other trusted adults in their lives discussed the risks with them and they understood their expectations.

EIGHT: Take proactive steps

By taking proactive steps to educate themselves about alcohol and prepare for college, you can make informed decisions, minimize risks, and thrive in your new environment.
