Unzip the Potential – Mecklenburg

Impacting Charlotte Mecklenburg

Unzip the Potential

The Unzip the Potential program is TGP’s founding program. Since 2018, our Local Hub has empowered over 14,000 students in the United States by providing them with the critical resources they need to succeed in the classroom.

This program provides low-opportunity K-12 Students with a resource-filled backpack containing a tailored school supply kit to provide equitable classroom experiences.

The Problem

IMPACTING CHARLOTTE

In Mecklenburg County alone,

there are over 35,159 Elementary Students living in low-economic status households.

The National Retail Federation found that the average family spends $684.79 on back-to-school shopping, which can be a significant burden for families living in poverty.

Our Solution

When children fall behind in learning, it is often a result of the lack resources and programming, not a lack capability. In marginalized communities, parents who lack sufficient access to tools and resources for their children see gravely negative results in future high school graduation and college graduation rates – that are the key to unlocking better economic outcomes.

Through our Unzip the Potential project, we aim to relieve some of this burden for families in Mecklenburg County through three primary methods:

What's in our Resource Kits?

The resources that are needed in one community, may not be the same that are need in another. That's why we work closely with our partners to make sure our resource kits are full of items are are ACTUALLY needed!

Unzip the Potential Partners

The Unzip the Potential program partners with several Charlotte area local nonprofits and businesses. Through these partnerships, we are able to offer wrap-around services and create more equitable college experiences for local Charlotte students.
