Let’s Talk About It: Substance Use in College Module Part 1
You’re about to start something big.
College is a new chapter: more freedom, more choices, more unknowns. You may already be hearing more conversations around drinking, smoking, weed, pills, or vapes. It can feel normal. Expected, even.
But normal doesn’t always mean healthy, and expected doesn’t mean required. At RTT, we’re not here to preach or judge. We’re here to help you navigate the real stuff you might face and point you to trusted resources that can support you.
What Changes from High School to College?
- Access increases. Substances like alcohol, marijuana, and stimulants may be easier to find.
- Social pressure shifts. There may be fewer adults around and more peer influence.
- Stress shows up differently. Between academics, relationships, finances, and identity, college life brings new challenges – and some students use substances to cope.
You’re Not Alone – Whatever You’re Experiencing
Some people are curious. Some feel pressured. Some are trying to feel better. Some choose not to use anything at all. Wherever you fall on that spectrum, there’s space for you here.
This module isn’t about scare tactics. It’s about helping you:
- Understand what changes in college
- Know how substances affect your mind and body
- Recognize options for support – whether for yourself or someone else
You Deserve Support Without Shame
No one should have to figure this out alone. Substance use is complex – and it’s often tied to bigger things like stress, trauma, loneliness, or mental health struggles. You deserve care, not judgment.
As you go through this module, we’ll link you to people and places who do have the answers. We’re here to help you connect with what’s real, what’s honest, and what’s helpful.
