Congratulations!

You’ve completed the Thriving Without Substances: Building a Healthy College Experience module.

Throughout this module, you’ve learned that substance abuse prevention is about much more than avoiding alcohol or drugs.

It is about creating a college experience built on healthy relationships, meaningful goals, positive habits, and a strong support system.

Research consistently shows that students who have strong protective factors are better equipped to manage stress, recover from challenges, and make healthy decisions throughout college.

The choices you make every day help shape the college experience you create for yourself.

What We Learned

Protective Factors Help You Thrive

One of the most important ideas in this module is the concept of protective factors.

Protective factors are the people, habits, experiences, and resources that help reduce risk and strengthen resilience.

Examples include:

  • Supportive friendships.
  • Healthy daily routines.
  • Positive mentors.
  • Campus involvement.
  • A sense of purpose.
  • Physical activity.
  • Good sleep habits.
  • Knowing when and how to ask for help.

Protective factors do not eliminate life’s challenges.

They make it easier to respond to those challenges in healthy ways.

Healthy Habits Build a Strong Foundation

Your daily choices matter.

Sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and time management all affect how you think, feel, and respond to difficult situations.

Healthy habits improve:

  • Mental health.
  • Academic performance.
  • Decision-making.
  • Emotional well-being.
  • Physical health.

When these habits become part of your routine, they strengthen your ability to cope with stress without relying on alcohol or other substances.

Purpose Creates Direction

College is an opportunity to discover what matters most to you.

Purpose may come from:

  • Your education.
  • Future career goals.
  • Helping others.
  • Leadership.
  • Personal growth.
  • Creative interests.
  • Faith or spirituality.
  • Family.
  • Service to your community.

Having a sense of purpose provides direction during difficult moments and helps guide decisions that align with your long-term goals.

Connection Matters

Humans are wired for connection.

Healthy relationships are one of the strongest protective factors against substance misuse.

You do not need hundreds of friends.

A few trusted people who encourage, support, and respect you can have a tremendous impact on your college experience.

Building meaningful relationships also creates opportunities to ask for help, celebrate successes, and navigate challenges together.

Thriving Looks Different for Everyone

There is no perfect college experience.

Some students will become campus leaders.

Some will work while attending school.

Some will participate in athletics.

Others will focus on academics, research, creative pursuits, or serving their communities.

Avoid comparing your journey to someone else’s.

Success is not measured by how closely your college experience matches someone else’s.

It is measured by whether you are building a life that reflects your own values and goals.

How This Relates to Substance Abuse Prevention

Substance abuse prevention is often viewed as avoiding risky behaviors.

While that is important, prevention is also about intentionally building a healthy life.

Students who have strong protective factors often have healthier ways to manage stress, stronger support systems during difficult times, and greater confidence in making decisions that align with their values.

Protective factors do not guarantee that challenges will never occur.

They provide a stronger foundation for navigating those challenges without relying on substances.

Every healthy habit, supportive relationship, meaningful experience, and positive decision contributes to a stronger, healthier future.

Final Reflection

Before taking the quiz, take a few moments to reflect on what you’ve learned.

Ask yourself:

  • Which protective factor is strongest in my life today?
  • Which protective factor would I like to strengthen during college?
  • What healthy habit do I want to prioritize this semester?
  • How can I become more involved on campus?
  • What kind of college experience do I want to create for myself?

Write your responses in a journal, notes app, or somewhere you can revisit them throughout your college journey.

Complete the Module Quiz

You’ve reached the final step of this module.

The quiz is not graded. Its purpose is to reinforce the key concepts you’ve learned and encourage you to reflect on how they apply to your own college experience.
